Thursday Tip - Dyeing Wool With Onion Skins

Here's a tutorial that Cheryl Smeja wrote up in preparation for Stefania Isaacson's first class at Shake Rag Alley in 2015:

"So I think I'll get "warmed up" for Stefania's class by doing a little batch of wool in onion skins. Onion skins are one of the easiest dye sources to use, since it doesn't require a mordant (a substance that helps bind the color to the fiber), and I can get them in February.

It takes a lot of some plant material to dye a little fiber. Luckily our friends at the Brew Pub here in Mineral Point saved a bunch of yellow and red skins for me, since I didn't start saving my own soon enough for this article. Sweet."

Intrigued by the notion of using natural dye sources? Let Stefania show you the ropes! She will be teaching two workshops at Shake Rag Alley in 2016:

Stefania Isaacson began teaching at Shake Rag Alley in 2015. She has been a life-long knitter, and started spinning and dying to supply herself with “the best yarns in the world!”

She has taught numerous workshops dealing in natural dyes, spinning and basket making, has spoken to numerous groups, and has appeared on Home & Garden TV as a guest on the Carol Duvall Show.

She sells handspun, natural hand dyed yarns, original knitting kits using her own yarns and patterns, hand dyed roving dyed with natural dyes, and handmade baskets. Most recently, Stefania has authored a book on natural dyes called In Search of the Perfect Green–and Orange, Too!
