Summer Workshop Fun

Summer is winding down. Last three classes of the summer are this coming weekend (Collage, Viking Knit Jewelry, and Canning Tomatoes & Jam). Then we welcome our Rug Hookers the first weekend after Labor Day.

After that, it's on to a full season of fall workshops...everything from blacksmithing and welding to fiber arts, mixed media, photography, rustic, lots of jewelry and more.
Check out the great calendar of classes.

Here's just a sampling of what we've been up to over the summer.

Creative Writing
The magical Shake Rag grounds are the perfect inspiration for creative writing. Here, several of Patty McNair's Fiction and Memoir students relax on the patio under the shade of the umbrellas.

Patty and Philip Hartigan returned in August. Philip taught Relief Printing with Linoleum Blocks and they teamed up for a day long Journal and Sketchbook workshop.

See Philip's wonderful blog post about their classes at Shake Rag.

Mosaic and Cement
The tents are set up most of the summer in front of the Cabinet Shop for our popular mosaic and cement classes, starting with Mosaic Madness in June. In July the intrepid team of Judy and Heidi led students in making a Mosaic 5 Part Garden Lantern. An August weekend of short three hour cement/mosaic workshops included leaf casting, hypertufa and faux bois.

Blacksmithing and Welding
Our forges are always busy even in the summer heat. Students can learn basic blacksmithing and welding skills, but can also make knives from railroad spikes and fashion some totally cool jewelry at the forge. Here's the fall lineup of classes at the forge....classes fill fast, so sign up early!

Jewelry
Our big jewelry bash of the year is Beads and Bangles in May but there are many opportunities to learn jewelry skills throughout the year. This summer's jewelry workshop offerings included PMC classes, polymer clay blending, wire wrapping and fused chains.

Fiber Arts
Fiber classes are another staple of our courses. Yarn Painting and Silk Painting are just two of the many offerings. More classes in the fall including Garden Silk Scarves with Public TV's Wisconsin Gardener, Shelley Ryan, knitting classes, and braided rugs. Check them out here.

Mixed Media and Paper/Book Arts
The summer also saw students trying their hand at creating Leaf Embossed Leather Journals with leather guru Cheryl Smeja, making really fun Whimsies from colored gourd pieces, playing with joint compound and acrylic paints and mediums to create Textured Mixed Media paintings, and learning Quilling techniques.

And there are even more great offerings this fall in drawing (ink and charcoal), Zentangles, Bent Willow chair, Shaker Oval Boxes, baskets, photography, and mosaic.

Hope to see you in class this fall!
