Shake Rag Alley Writing Residency Partnerships

We are very excited to announce that Shake Rag Alley is partnering with the Council for Wisconsin Writers and Wisconsin People & Ideas to offer week-long residencies to their annual writing contest winners.

  • Wisconsin People & Ideas is the quarterly magazine of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters. The Council for Wisconsin Writers awards eight annual writing awards and Wisconsin People & Ideas holds annual short story and poetry contests in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival.
  • A second residency partnership with the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters and the Wisconsin Poet Laureate Commission grants a week-long residency to the Wisconsin Poet Laureate each year of the Laureate's two year term. The current Wisconsin Poet Laureate is Bruce Dethlefsen who will be in residence during the winter of 2011/2012.

In the tradition established by Edenfred, the Terry Family Foundation’s artist residence in Madison, contest-winning writers and poets will be provided with a week of uninterrupted time to focus on a project of their choice. Artists will stay in Shake Rag's inspiring lodging facilities in the nurturing environment of the historic Mineral Point artist community. “We recognize the loss felt by the region and the state with the closing of Edenfred, and are proud to honor its legacy by stepping up to provide artist residencies,” says Shake Rag Alley Board President Don Hay.

Allison Slavick is the recipient of the Wisconsin People & Ideas’ 2011 Short Story Contest for her short story Coming About and will be the first 2011 contest winner to enjoy a week-long residency at Shake Rag Alley.

In conjunction with her residency, Allison will teach a two-hour workshop at Shake Rag:

Becoming a Writer: Beyond Putting Pen to Paper
Saturday, November 5

In the workshop, Slavick will lead simple exercises that help quiet the mind, allowing writers to find their unique voice, and provide a guided exercise that will result in a simple short story. Participants will share their work out loud, if they choose. You’ll come away with inspiration, resources, and new techniques for writing well. Bring your favorite writing implement and paper.
Click here for registration information. Workshop space is limited, so register soon!

Allison's workshop is the kick-off of Shake Rag's SRA Winter Writers Series, a new initiative to support and encourage development of regional writers. The series will run between the months of November through April, and will include workshops, readings and community outreach activities featuring Shake Rag's writing residency partnership organizations’ annual writing contest winners. In addition, Shake Rag Alley will offer several unique, low-cost artist residencies through a juried application process (more information on the application process to come in future posts).
