Drawing and Painting Workshops at Shake Rag Alley

Shake Rag's Drawing and Painting workshops run the gamut from the very traditional to newer leading edge techniques and media. Students this summer could learn all about acrylic painting, hone their skills in an exciting oil and cold wax technique, or study two very old but also very current techniques, encaustic painting and Chinese brush painting.

Rebecca Crowell had a full class of enthusiastic returning students for her Oil & Wax Workshop: Level II. Some were graduates of her 2010 beginning class at Shake Rag while others had taken her classes elsewhere and came from all around the country.

Everyone was so engrossed in the class that they did not want to stop (one student described the class as "life changing"!). Rebecca graciously agreed to extend the class for an extra day and six students were able to stay through Monday.

(See our Instructor Spotlight post about Rebecca Crowell.)

Rebecca will be back at Shake Rag in October for another session of Oil & Wax Level II. If you have some experience with this technique and would like to hone your skills, don't miss this opportunity!

In July, beginning students learned Encaustic Painting, the oldest painting technique, from another excellent teacher, Minnesota artist Jeffrey Hirst. This 3 day class covered both basic and not so basic approaches to the use of hot wax. Definitely look for future classes with Jeffrey in 2012.

Chinese Brush Painting students learned a ton of techniques from Stella Dobbins, who has studied the art form in Japan. They all are eager to take a longer advanced level class and we are hoping to get Stella back to do just that. If you missed this summer's class, Stella will be doing another class on October 1st with a focus on Landscape, Flowers, Birds and Fish. And do check our spring class schedule for more Chinese Brush Painting classes with Stella - spring schedule should be up on the website in December.
