Thursday Tips - Bead Soup Blog Party and The Sketchbook Challenge

This is the first of a series of Thursday Tips posts in which we'll share some resources, techniques, ideas, or inspiration that get us excited and that we hope you will enjoy. Can't promise we'll pull it together EVERY Thursday but do check back regularly.

This week's Thursday Tip is about online participatory art opportunities. A great thing about the internet is the ability to connect with a community of like-minded artists and crafters, even if you are homebound or geographically isolated. One way to do that is to participate in online challenges and art exchanges...plus it's a whole lot of fun and a great way to get going creatively.

We bring you two today - Bead Soup Blog Party and the Sketchbook Challenge.

Bead Soup Blog Party is hosted by Lori Anderson. There are three Bead Soup Blog Parties a year. On the sign-up dates, you email Lori to let her know you want to participate after which Lori pairs up everyone with a Party Partner. You send your Party Partner a Party Pack containing a focal bead, some coordinating beads and a clasp. When you get your package of beads, show your beads on your blog (yep, you do need to have a blog), then make something with it, take a picture, and post it on your blog on the Party day. Then everyone hops around to as many Party Blogs as possible to see what people made on Party Day!

If you want to participate, the next Party is coming right up - sign-up dates are August 1-3. Visit the Bead Soup Blog Party page where you'll find all the details you need to get going. Have fun!

The Sketchbook Challenge was launched at the beginning of 2011 by a group of 16 artists led by Sue Bleiweiss in the hopes of inspiring people to maintain an art sketchbook. Each month a new theme is announced on the blog and throughout the month they show images from the hosting artist's sketchbooks and talk about the intention and inspiration behind them. And, along the way they share tips, techniques and tutorials. There is a Flickr group where you can post photos of your own sketchbook art. And that's not all! Thanks to the generosity of some terrific sponsors there are monthly prizes (chosen by a random draw). It's free and it's open to artists of all skill levels (don't forget that these ARE sketchbook pages, not finished gallery-ready works of art, so don't be intimidated).

To learn all about how to participate visit the Sketchbook Challenge blog and click on their "How the Challenge Works" tab. Check out the great tutorials on the "Tutorials" tab and be sure to look at the photos on the Sketchbook Challenge Flickr group to see what others have been doing.
